Why Is My Car Pulling to One Side?

If your car drifts to the right or left while driving — or requires constant steering correction to go straight — something deserves a closer look. Pulling can have several causes, and the right one isn't always obvious without an inspection. Here's what's commonly involved.

Tire Pressure

Unequal tire pressure between the left and right tires is one of the simplest causes of pulling — and one of the easiest to check. A tire that's significantly lower on one side than the other creates uneven rolling resistance, which can pull the vehicle toward the lower-pressure side. Check all four tires against the manufacturer's recommended pressure (found on the door jamb sticker, not the tire sidewall) before assuming a more complex cause.

Tire Condition

Tires that are worn unevenly, have internal damage, or have significantly different tread depths from side to side can cause pulling. A tire with a separated belt or internal damage may pull even if the pressure is correct. If you've checked pressure and the pull persists, tire condition is worth inspecting.

Wheel Alignment

Alignment refers to the angles at which your tires contact the road. When alignment is off — particularly the camber (tilt) or toe (direction) settings — the vehicle can pull toward the side that's out of spec. Alignment can drift over time from normal driving, or shift suddenly after hitting a pothole or curb. A vehicle that pulls consistently to one side, especially after recent road impact, is a good candidate for an alignment check.

Steering Components

Worn or damaged steering components — including tie rods, the steering rack, or power steering components — can cause pulling or wandering. Steering-related pulling often feels different from alignment pulling: it may be less consistent, or accompanied by looseness or play in the steering wheel. An inspection can identify whether steering components are involved.

Suspension Components

Worn suspension components — including control arm bushings, ball joints, or struts — can affect how the vehicle tracks. Suspension wear can also cause alignment to drift, so the two issues are often related. If suspension components are worn, replacing them without checking alignment may leave the underlying problem unresolved.

Brake-Related Pulling

A vehicle that pulls specifically when braking — rather than while driving straight — may have a brake-related cause. A stuck brake caliper, uneven brake pad wear, or a brake hose that's restricting fluid flow can cause one side to apply more braking force than the other, pulling the vehicle toward that side. If the pull only happens during braking, the brake system deserves inspection.

The exact cause of pulling requires inspection — it can't be determined from the symptom alone. Tire pressure is worth checking first because it's simple and free. If the pull persists after correcting pressure, an inspection of tires, alignment, steering, and suspension is the right next step.
