Why Is My Steering Wheel Shaking?
A steering wheel that vibrates or shakes is one of the more noticeable things a car can do — and it can have several different causes depending on when it happens and what it feels like. Here's what's commonly involved.

Tire and Wheel Balance
Out-of-balance tires are one of the most common causes of steering wheel vibration, particularly at highway speeds. When a tire and wheel assembly isn't balanced evenly, it creates a rotating imbalance that produces vibration — often felt through the steering wheel. Balance can shift over time or after hitting a pothole. Wheel balancing is a relatively simple service that can resolve vibration when balance is the cause.
Tire Condition
Tires that are worn unevenly, have flat spots from sitting, or have internal damage can cause vibration even if they're properly balanced. A tire with a separated belt or uneven wear pattern may produce a vibration that balancing alone won't fix. Tire inspection is an important part of diagnosing steering wheel vibration.
Wheel Condition
A bent or damaged wheel can cause vibration that persists even after balancing. Wheels can be damaged by hitting potholes, curbs, or road debris. If vibration started after a road impact, wheel condition is worth inspecting.
Brake-Related Vibration
Vibration that occurs specifically when braking — felt through the steering wheel or brake pedal — often involves the brake rotors. Rotors that have developed thickness variation (sometimes called 'warped' rotors) can cause pulsation through the pedal and steering wheel when the brakes are applied. This is a brake system issue, not a tire or alignment issue. If the vibration only happens when braking, the brake system deserves inspection.
Steering Components
Worn steering components — including tie rod ends, the steering rack, or worn steering linkage — can contribute to vibration or looseness in the steering wheel. Steering-related vibration may feel different from tire-related vibration: it may be less rhythmic, or accompanied by looseness or play in the wheel.
Suspension Components
Worn suspension components — including ball joints, control arm bushings, or struts — can allow movement that contributes to vibration. Suspension wear can also affect how tires contact the road, which can produce or worsen vibration. Steering and suspension components are closely related and are often inspected together.
A Note on Alignment
Alignment is sometimes blamed for steering wheel vibration, but alignment alone rarely causes vibration. Alignment affects how the vehicle tracks and how tires wear — it doesn't typically produce the kind of rhythmic vibration felt through the steering wheel. If alignment is off, it may cause uneven tire wear that eventually contributes to vibration, but the more direct causes are usually tires, balance, or brakes.
Steering wheel vibration can have more than one cause at the same time. A proper inspection evaluates tires, balance, wheels, brakes, steering, and suspension together — rather than replacing parts one at a time and hoping the vibration goes away.
