Why Are My Tires Wearing Unevenly?

Tires are designed to wear evenly across the tread surface. When they don't — when one edge wears faster than the other, or one tire wears faster than the others — it's a sign that something else deserves attention. Here's what commonly causes uneven tire wear.

Reading the Wear Pattern

Different wear patterns point toward different causes. Edge wear — where the outer or inner edges of the tread wear faster than the center — often indicates alignment or inflation issues. Center wear — where the center of the tread wears faster than the edges — often indicates over-inflation. Cupping or scalloping — an irregular, wavy wear pattern — often involves suspension components. One tire wearing significantly faster than the others may indicate a localized alignment, suspension, or inflation issue. The wear pattern is useful diagnostic information, but it doesn't replace a proper inspection.

Tire Pressure

Improper inflation is one of the most common causes of uneven tire wear. An under-inflated tire flexes more than intended and wears faster on the outer edges. An over-inflated tire contacts the road primarily in the center and wears faster there. Checking and maintaining tire pressure at the manufacturer's recommended level (found on the door jamb sticker) is the simplest preventive measure.

Wheel Alignment

Alignment refers to the angles at which the tires contact the road. When alignment is off — particularly camber (tilt) or toe (direction) — tires wear unevenly. A vehicle with excessive negative camber (top of the tire tilted inward) will wear the inner edge of the tire faster. Toe misalignment causes a scrubbing effect that wears the tread unevenly. Alignment can drift over time from normal driving, or shift after hitting a pothole or curb.

Suspension Components

Worn suspension components can affect how the tires contact the road and cause uneven wear. Worn struts or shocks can cause a bouncing motion that produces cupping or scalloping wear. Worn control arm bushings or ball joints can allow the wheel to move in ways that affect tire contact and wear. Addressing suspension wear without checking alignment may leave the root cause of the tire wear unresolved.

Tire Rotation

Front and rear tires wear differently depending on the vehicle's drivetrain and how it's driven. Regular tire rotation — moving tires to different positions on the vehicle — helps even out wear and extend tire life. If tires haven't been rotated regularly, uneven wear between front and rear tires is common. Your owner's manual specifies the recommended rotation interval for your vehicle.

Addressing the Root Cause

Replacing tires that have worn unevenly without addressing the cause means the new tires will wear the same way. If alignment is off, the new tires will wear unevenly. If suspension components are worn, the same wear pattern will develop. An inspection that identifies the cause — and addresses it before or at the time of tire replacement — protects the investment in new tires.

Uneven tire wear is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The wear pattern provides useful clues, but a proper inspection of tire pressure, alignment, and suspension is the right way to identify the cause and prevent it from recurring.
